A SHORT HISTORY OF MEN IN MAKEUP
Contrary to popular belief, men have utilised makeup since pre-history, employing body adornment to signify status and identity, as well as to present themselves as formidable warriors.
During the Tudor Era and within the Court of Louis XVI, both genders engaged in makeup application, with lead paint used to achieve a pale complexion and cochineal enhancing cheeks and lips.
Following the French Revolution, a shift towards a more subdued masculine aesthetic emerged, characterised by the abandonment of makeup.
However, the revival of male cosmetics in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s was largely driven by the influence of music on fashion and masculine identity.
