A SHORT HISTORY OF MEN IN MAKEUP

Contrary to popular belief; men have worn makeup since pre-history in the form of body adornment to indicate status and identity and as fearsome warriors. It has also been used since in times of Cleopatra and more recent eras such as the 18th Century in the Court of Louis 16th-where lead paint was used to pale down a complexion and Cochineal was applied to the cheek and lip. After the French Revolution nobles sought to appear less extravagant and more practical in their appearance-together with a great many wars and battles fought over the next 150 years; a more masculine dress and therefore no makeup was adopted. It was revived in the 1960s, 70s and 80s as music became a strong influence in fashions and male identity.
