A SHORT HISTORY OF MEN IN MAKEUP
Contrary to popular belief; men have worn makeup since pre-history in the form of body adornment to indicate status and identity and as fearsome warriors.
Throughout the Tudor Era and within the Court of Louis 16th- makeup was used by men and women. Lead paint was used to pale down a complexion and Cochineal was applied to the cheek and lip. After the French Revolution nobles sought to appear less extravagant. Therefore, masculine dress and a no makeup look was adopted.
In recent history, makeup for men was revived in the 1960s, 70s and 80s as music became a strong influence in fashions and male identity.
